NC500 best beaches: Oldshoremore at sunset

The North Coast 500 (NC500) is known for rugged landscapes, coastal roads, and some of the UK’s best beaches. Among these stops, Oldshoremore Beach, near Kinlochbervie, is a quiet spot perfect for a sunset visit. While beautiful all day, the beach takes on a warm glow at sunset that’s hard to forget.

In the evening, Oldshoremore is also a good place to spot local wildlife. Look for seabirds along the shore and seals in the water, and sometimes even dolphins or whales in summer. When we visited in late September, the clear water and friendly seals made it an especially memorable experience.

Practical tips for visiting Oldshoremore

  • Parking: There’s a small free car park at Oldshoremore Beach with basic public toilets and bins to dispose of waste.

  • Respect the Environment: Oldshoremore is part of a protected area, so be mindful of the local wildlife and vegetation. Stay on designated paths, take any litter with you, and avoid disturbing animals.

  • Tides and Weather: Always check tide times and the weather forecast before heading to the beach. Low tide reveals more of the sandy shoreline, while high tide covers much of the sand, creating a different but equally beautiful experience.

Other nearby beaches

  • Polin Beach
Just a short seven-minute drive from Oldshoremore, Polin Beach offers a similar, secluded charm. With soft sands and clear waters, it’s ideal for a quiet afternoon or a refreshing swim away from the crowds.

  • Sandwood Bay
Widely regarded as one of Scotland’s most stunning beaches, Sandwood Bay is well worth the effort to reach. The beach is accessible only by a scenic 4.5-mile walk, with the trailhead just a six-minute drive from Oldshoremore. Known for its isolation, towering dunes, and impressive sea stack, Sandwood Bay requires a full day to explore. You can even wild camp here, making it a perfect destination for adventurous beachgoers.
