NC500 best beaches: wild swimming at Achmelvich Bay

Achmelvich Bay is one of the crown jewels of the North Coast 500, offering stunning white sands, turquoise waters, and a tranquil setting that’s hard to beat. This small but iconic bay is perfect for beach lovers, wild swimmers, and anyone looking for a slice of paradise along the NC500 route. We visited in September and we had the place mostly to ourselves!

Getting There

Achmelvich Bay is located just a few miles north of Lochinver in the Scottish Highlands. From the village, follow the single-track road with passing places that winds its way to the bay - the road is quite narrow in places but large camper vans can still get down there. The drive itself offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills and rugged coastline.

Parking and facilities

More recently the parking and facilities have been upgraded (which also means it might get a little busier than previous years). There is now a paid car park close to the beach, with charges typically ranging from £2-£5, depending on the season and length of stay. You’ll find:

  • Toilet block with accessible toilet, baby changing and shower.

  • A campsite nearby for those who want to stay overnight

  • The beach is dog-friendly all year round, making it a great spot for families traveling with pets.

Wild Swimming

Achmelvich Bay is a fantastic spot for wild swimming, thanks to its crystal-clear waters and serene conditions. The shallow entry points make it accessible for swimmers of all levels, including families, while the vibrant blue hues give the bay a tropical vibe—even if the water is on the chilly side! For those seeking adventure, you can swim further out to explore the rocky edges of the bay, where there's plenty to see both above and below the surface. Keep an eye out for wildlife, as seals, seabirds, and even dolphins are known to frequent these waters.

While the bay is generally calm, it’s always a good idea to check tide times and weather conditions before heading out. The close proximity of the car park also makes Achmelvich ideal for paddle boarding and kayaking, offering even more ways to enjoy this stunning coastal location.

Vesty Beach

While Achmelvich Bay is the main attraction, there is another small beach within walking distance. Just a short walk along the coastal path, this hidden gem is often quieter than the main bay. The smaller cove offers a more secluded experience but remains within close proximity to the car park.

Both beaches can be reached via well-marked trails and are worth exploring if you have the time.

These two beaches are the perfect stop on the NC500 for anyone who loves natural beauty and a bit of adventure. The white sands, clear waters, and peaceful atmosphere make it an unforgettable destination.
